Sunday Sketches while Laundry Washes

Today was laundry day and while the wash was happening, I was getting a few sketches off as I sat in the park across the street listening to the birds and wind in the trees and capturing the occasional person walking along the path with my sketchbook.

I spent Saturday morning with my friend Tom having coffee and quiche at Shaw's Coffee on The Hill. We drew until the day got longer and Tom set off while I drew for a bit longer wanting to fill out a few pages at least. My drawings improved and then even I got a little tired and definitely ready to head on to the next thing.

Urban Sketching - Old Webster Groves

I finished off the day with a few panels from Old Webster Groves. While drawing Russsel Vanecek and his wife ran into me sketching during an evening out. We usually run into each other at Marlene's Studio. 

This time the last few days I have been drawing very quickly and gesture-like. I am going to try the same subjects that I drew yesterday again today and this time be more intent on accuracy as a goal and more minimalist in  capturing the details of the scene. 

As I sat drawing, I watched a train pass at the intersection of  North Gore Ave and West Pacific Ave. As an intersection, it does have a feel of an older more idyllic North American town from a time past as a group of teen boys walked across the tracks and horsed around while a few other locals walked up and down Gore around dinner time...

As the runners came past Tower Grove Park on Magnolia, I stood about halfway through the park on the south side of the road drawing a picture of the scene as I could.

Plein Air Painting

This weekend I went about 75 miles out of town for a plein air painting event with Bruce Wulff. Unfortunately, it rained most of the time we were there. We fled from the rain early, but I did capture this brief little sketch. The iPad screen looks darker in the bright light, so the coors turned out a bit more saturated and brighter than they perhaps should have been.

Carondelet Park

This evening the sun was setting over people fishing at the boardwalk at Carondelet Park. I didn't capture it all in the frame, but at least I captured a little bit of the sunset and reflections on the lake.

I upped the value range in this, but perhaps I could tink about keeping it low key meaning restricting the highest lights to a high mid-range so as to seem like the late evening as it actually was.
