Cleaning House

In the time since I have been drawing on the iPad, I have accumulated quite a few drawings on my iPad. I worry that they will be lost if the iPad should ever crash. I am taking the old drawings and either deleting them or finishing them off and exporting them. You can export as a PSD fro Procreate or Brushes 3.

The first one was a drawing of Stephanie Macnair. Below I have taken the original drawing from Brushes and exported it to Procreate, which is an application that is starting to become more familiar now. I especially like that unlike some other drawing apps, that you can rotate the canvas as you are drawing to get the best angle to draw. This is much like drawing on a sheet of paper in that respect.

The paintings of François Baraud have been a source of inspiration for me in this painting. I used them to understand the dramatic effects of light harmonious tone.

Portrait of David

This is an update on the drawings from last week. It is pleasant to update the blog versus a Facebook page or some other thing as I can focus more on drawing and less on distractions. There really aren't too many over here, and the audience is less. I am not sure many people actually check these posts out. Productivity!

Kristine Gallows at Tavern of Fine Arts

Last night we had a group of artists at the Tavern of Fine Arts. Kristine posed for us. When she walked in, we didn't know what costume to expect. She posed as you can see in a day of the dead theme.

Pencil Portrait

It has been a while since I drew a self-portrait, and in pencil at that.I found myself wanting a broader pencil side.  The eye geometry is off a bit. Try again maybe?

Gong Li - Second Drawing

Back in 2003 I drew a ink pen drawing of the actress Gong Li in my sketchbook from a still frame from the movie "To Live". The drawing was primitive. Here is a second try at the same subject but with a different approach.

I started out (above) with 5 basic tones that were a rough palette of what was going on in the picture as far as hue and value. You can see those in the squares at the top of the drawing. Then below as needed, I augmented the drawing with four new tones which had to still match one of the five basic values I had established early on.

Carondelet Park

This evening the sun was setting over people fishing at the boardwalk at Carondelet Park. I didn't capture it all in the frame, but at least I captured a little bit of the sunset and reflections on the lake.

I upped the value range in this, but perhaps I could tink about keeping it low key meaning restricting the highest lights to a high mid-range so as to seem like the late evening as it actually was.

Tower Grove park

Above is a sketch of a couple at Tower Grove Park resting under a tree. I tried to resolve the basic composition with 5 simple values shown below.
