Quill Practice

I just wanted to play with a quill pen and see how my lines have changed over the years. Here is an update on a previous post from 2005. One clear difference is that I absolutely would not render local color anymore with pen.  Instead I limit my lines to the rendering of shadows. Also, I would do it fairly light-handedly. Definitely, I don't want to clog areas up. Although I have made some recent mistakes as I see in the drawing at Mokabees where I have chosen to render some black things with penwork. Not the preferred thing, I think.

Essential Skeleton

Some of my anatomy is a bit off, but I am reminded of a great app that I found that I would also recommend as skeletal reference. Here are some pictures from it. You can rotate it all around and zoom in really close. Pretty cool! The app is called "Essential Skeleton 2".

Poseable

Another app that is fun but still pretty basic is "Poseable". I just figured out how to rotate the limbs properly in any drection. Here is an image that I made using Poseable's figures.

The Brewbadours Play at Mokabe's

The Brewbadours
Above is a style that I draw in sometimes when there is much motion. However I am not entirely satisfied with the sketch. I think that I would like to do the same but with a very light marker and then come in with an ink pen. Or, perhaps a lively pencil gesture and then pen drawing over the top.

A Youtube video of the Brewbadours is below. Currently, they play every Sunday at Mokabe's morning buffet breakfast.

Rock N' Roll Marathon

As the runners came past Tower Grove Park on Magnolia, I stood about halfway through the park on the south side of the road drawing a picture of the scene as I could.

Back to the Organic

I had to pick up the old pen and do some non-digital figure sketches again. Maybe I could scan them in though and clean the page up a bit.

Soulard People

In the examples below I am just playing with the contrast of my shadow layers. I have three of them. At top they are like 25%, 50% and 100%. In the middle they are closer to 50%,75% 100%. At bottom, they are 20%, 40% 60%.

I do feel a ned to put down the iPad and also take up the pen again as well. I don't want to get rusty. Here is another one from Soulard. This one has a bit of textured brush also.
