Various Urban Sketches around Saint Louis including Shaw's Coffee

Top left is a sketch of a homeless man who was eating his dinner at a bus station after the evening train ride. He got off the same train as I did.

Top right is the same bus and train station. I liked the way the concrete radiated in a curve.

Bottom left is my girlfriend Lisa and a friend of hers named Chris sitting at Shaw's coffee house in the Italian neighborhood ("the Hill").

Bottom right is a couple of women who were sitting for their morning coffee. I asked if they minded me drawing them and also snapped a picture as I thought it would make a great watercolor later in my studio.

Saint Louis Urban Sketches - Downtown scene with Arch and Metro Sketches

Saint Louis Urban Sketches - Downtown scene with Arch and Metro Sketches

My girlfriend left me downtown as she went off to work. Downtown Saint Louis is out of my normal routine, but in the morning there is a bit of time between when she goes to work and when I have to arrive at my work. Usually, I can spend an hour or close to it drawing. I can take a few minutes to step outside my normal path and find something new to place in my sketchbook. On March 30th it was the sunrise over the Saint Louis Arch, as people ferried themselves off to work through the wide downtown streets. I stopped and watched people as they stepped from the sidewalk to the street and then to the sidewalk again sometimes in silhouette, and then into the light.

As I left the street myself, I stepped into the familiar train. People usually look deeply into their iPods or Android phones. They are removed from their surroundings except for the sound ques that they have trained themselves to hear when it is their stop. These sounds differentiate one station from another.

Saint Louis Transportation Sketches - No events, just life...

Saint Louis Transportation Sketches - No events, just life...

Many days I take public transportation to work. As I travel, I sketch what I see. Sometimes I think that later I might make a painting. Recently, I got two pieces of art in our local watercolor society show. Somebody asked me how I chose my subjects. Like these little frames, they are just odd bits collected as I travel here or there. There are no events usually, the only story is life going on around me, and small pictures that you might not otherwise take notice of, but make up part of the daily sojourn.
